chapter eleven
Nash didn’t want to feel smug over staking his claim on
Jayden. But he did. He knew there were no plans between them
for after this trip, though inside, he wished there were. Secret
wishes. While they’d been playing it up for family and friends
gathering for the wedding, neither had mentioned what would
happen after. When they got home. He was going to start classes
and Jayden would go back to work. As far as he knew, that was all.
He wasn’t giving up on the relationship possibilities with Jayden,
though.
Once or twice during dinner, he’d caught Jewel looking their
way. He didn’t know why she was fixated on Jayden. He was gay.
Wrong parts. He didn’t know the women she was sitting with,
but they would occasionally put their heads together and whisper.
He knew from watching his sisters, that never ended well. And it
usually involved him being yelled at or worse before they’d gotten
what they wanted.
His dad had been heavy-handed with all of them, especially
once his mother had been incarcerated, but he was definitely
more so with Nash. He was pretty sure that’s why the girls had
also fled as soon as they were able. Trini and Elizabeth were in
San Francisco. Nash had been stuck in Shasta until he’d dared
the phone call to his cousin. As the last child at home, all of his
father’s rage had fallen on him.
Nash had known Bill was gay, though he honestly barely
knew the man. Nash’s and Bill’s dads were brothers but he hadn’t
seen any of Bill’s family since he was maybe nine, if not younger.
Knowing now what he did, he could understand how the family
had shattered because of Santos’s homophobia.
He knew there were also three aunts, and countless other
cousins, but his father had managed to drive a wedge between
himself and his entire family. You’d think he’d get a clue that he might
be on the wrong side, he silently thought. If everyone was open

or even supportive of equality, then he was the lone dissenter.
There wasn’t anything Nash could do. The only thing he would do
was stay away. Live his life. He had a career to study for, a plan.
Maybe find someone to spend that life with. Maybe even be lucky
enough to taste love.
He glanced toward Jayden, who was laughing warmly with
his mother. Stewart seemed more relaxed now, though he really
hadn’t spoken to Nash. At least he did apologize. Little steps. He
understood that.
Dinner was nice, and he didn’t make any major mistakes.
There was one thing to be said about this trip. His sisters were
going to be sooo jealous when he got to tell them everything he did
and saw while in Florida. Everything from the beautiful beach to
the luxury of the hotel. He suddenly remembered the necklaces.
Still needed to grab those.
He asked Jayden, “Can we stop by the souvenir store
tomorrow? I want to grab those seahorse chains.”
“Sure. The rehearsal stuff isn’t until around two, so we’ll have
time.” He smiled and Nash thought he’d melt. “Are they much
older than you?”
“Trini is twenty-eight, and Elizabeth is twenty-two. Trini is
the one who is married.”
“Were your ages planned that way?” Georgia asked.
